For those of you who aren't familiar with this, they are cheap parts but very labor intensive to replace. For some reason these things eat up pinion bearings. This is the third Jeep we have had and the third one that needed bearings replaced in the rear, that is the only reason I gave it a 4 for reliability. The Overland model is so nice and comfortable, I drove a Limited before and this is even nicer. I reluctantly turned it over to her after spending a week cleaning it, registering it, and doing whatever I could to procrastinate, I didn't want to give it up. The Cherokee is a great truck for serious drivers that want a safe, reliable work horse, and I get 17/20MPG average. I called Monroe Tech Support and asked if they could help me fix this issue, and the guy laughed and said "they get calls from Cherokee owners all the time". I have put 200,000 miles on a 2002 Grand Cherokee 2x4 and this truck is a dream in every way but the ride, way too stiff for me. If you get the high-output 4.7 V-8, be prepared for neck-snapping acceleration and the accompanying abysmal gas mileage. Generally fun to drive, with good handling for an SUV. Also, I hear that the dual-zone climate control system is a little sketchy, though I've had no problems yet. This seems to be a common problem on this Jeep model, there is a little plastic piece in the window system that breaks frequently. First the driver side window stopped functioning (broken regulator) and two weeks later the passenger side front window did the same thing-stopped working, then the window glass dropped out of view. This Jeep had a year left to run on the warranty, which was fortunate, because there have been a number of little glitches. When I bought the Jeep, gas prices were averaging $2.50, now around $4.50, and around town mileage for this beast is around 14-15 mpg. All that capability (V-8, heavy-duty suspension, all-time 4WD) comes at a price, and fuel consumption is high. This is a very comfortable and roadworthy Jeep, but also has the underpinnings for excellent off-road capability. Had to remove an afermarket theft protection system that malfunctioned, but otherwise the Jeep performed flawlessly. Bought a 2002 Grand Cherokee Overland on EBay, and proceeded to drive it across the country.
